November 2013 became special for fans of the Japanese Subaru brand, as it was then that the fourth generation of the iconic Subaru WRX sports sedan, formerly known as the Impreza, was presented.
In comparison with the third-generation model, the novelty acquired a more dynamic and modern appearance, received a better and better-equipped interior, as well as a more powerful engine and a new manual transmission.
At the beginning of 2017, during the North American auto show, “Subarovtsy” presented a restyled version of the model, which received minor external improvements, even better finishing materials, as well as an expanded list of equipment that was previously unavailable. In addition, the technical component has undergone a fundamental revision, which made the car even more agile, responsive and predictable in handling.
Exterior Subaru WRX
The appearance of the restyled WRX can be described as “moderately predatory.”
The “muzzle” of the sports sedan is represented by a 6-angle false radiator grille, modern head optics, an embossed hood with an impressive air intake, as well as a muscular front bumper, which received a huge air intake mouth and a pair of LED fog lights.
The car’s profile shows inflated wheel arches, a domed roof, a long bonnet, and sculpted sidewalls.
The rear of the sports sedan sports stylish taillights, a compact boot lid topped with a small spoiler, and a monumental rear bumper with a powerful diffuser and two pairs of exhaust pipes.
Special attention should be paid to the narrow “gills” of the air ducts, located behind the front wheel arches, designed to improve the aerodynamics of the car.
The car rises above the roadway by at least 135 mm, which will be enough for most of the potential buyers of the model.
Like its predecessor, the car is offered in several body paint options, to which two more colors have been added – Lapis Blue and Pure Red. Already in the base, Subaru WRX is equipped with 18 ”wheels with low-profile tires.
The interior of the new Subaru
Over the years, car enthusiasts and car critics have scolded Subaru models for their rather uniform and uninteresting interior design. And now, finally, the Subarovites listened to the comments and equipped the WRX model with a rather modern, stylish, and functional interior.
The driver’s seat received a new multifunctional steering wheel with a slightly cut lower rim, as well as an informative instrument panel, represented by a pair of analog dials and an onboard computer LCD monitor located between them.
In the upper part of the laconic central dashboard, there is a small display, which displays various information about the condition of the car. This is followed by a block of air ducts, a small display of the multimedia information center (with a maximum of 7-inches), and three functional twists responsible for controlling the car’s climate system.
The front passengers are offered excellent seats with well-developed lateral support, an optimal filler in terms of rigidity, and a sufficient number of adjustments.
A fairly high transmission tunnel passes between the seats of the first row, on which the manufacturer has placed a comfortable armrest, a hand brake poker, a pair of cup holders, and a gearshift lever.
The rear sofa is able to accommodate three riders, offering a fairly large amount of free space by the standards of a golf class. It boasts a well-designed and ergonomic profile and folds down to accommodate long loads.
Trunk volume is 460 liters as standard, but with the rear row folded down, the user can expect more than double the amount of cargo space. It is also worth mentioning that under the raised floor of the luggage compartment there is a repair kit and a stowaway.
Specifications Subaru WRX 2018
The restyled Subaru WRX is offered exclusively with a 2-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder gasoline engine, completely made of aluminum, as well as an aggregated direct fuel supply system, turbocharging, and a 16-valve timing. Such an engine allows developing a maximum of 268 “horses” (at 5600 rpm) and a peak of 350 Nm of torque (available in the range of 2400-5200 rpm). It is paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable “Lineatronic” variator, available as an option.
Depending on the type of transmission, acceleration from 0 to 100 takes 6 (6.3) seconds, and the maximum speed is 215 (240) km / h for the version with manual transmission and variator, respectively. Average fuel consumption fluctuates between 9-9.2 liters for every 100 km of track, while in the city the car absorbs about 12.5 liters / 100 km.
The front suspension of the Subaru WRX has an independent architecture and is represented by MacPherson struts, and the rear is independent with double wishbones. The deceleration of the car is provided by disc brakes on both axles, where the front wheels are additionally equipped with a ventilation system. The steering is made according to the type of “rack-pinion”, and is also supplemented by an adaptive electric booster, which adjusts the steering response depending on the speed and driving style of the driver.
Special attention should be paid to the Symmetrical AWD all-wheel-drive system, which the car is equipped with already in the base. Depending on the type of pre-installed gearbox, the car relies on two different modifications of the all-wheel-drive:
It is available in tandem with a manual transmission and is represented by a center differential and a viscous coupling, which provides a torque distribution in a 5 to 50 ratio.
It is paired with a CVT variator and is represented by a planetary type differential that can distribute the moment in a 45 to 55 ratio in favor of the rear axle.
The complex security systems of the new Subaru WRX
The updated Subaru WRX is offered with a wide range of systems designed to improve the overall level of car safety. Among them are:
- Rearview camera;
- Tri-mode SI-Drive system;
- DVC system, responsible for dynamic stabilization;
- 7 airbags (frontal, side + curtain airbags + knee airbag in the area of the driver’s knees);
- Light and rain level sensor;
- Cruise control;
- Automatic control system for long-range lighting;
- Technology for detecting vehicles moving from behind;
- Heating system for windscreen and rear glass, as well as external rear-view mirrors;
- LED headlights + DRL;
- LED fog lights;
- Seat belts;
- ABS and ESP systems;
- Central locking.
The body of the novelty is made with the wide use of heavy-duty steel grades and is additionally equipped with special zones of programmed crumpling. As noted by the developer, the torsional rigidity of the body has increased by 9 and 41% in comparison with the last generation of the regular Subaru Impreza and the previous-generation WRX version.
The restyled Subaru WRX is attractive and modern, as well as a dynamic and well-equipped car with excellent dynamics and close-to-reference handling. This is a car that can easily compete with more eminent sports cars, which have a noticeably higher cost.
