In the third-generation Peugeot 308 family, a replenishment – the station wagon with the traditional SW designation debuted. Like the Peugeot 308 SW unveiled three months earlier, it will be available not only with petrol and diesel engines but also in two plug-in hybrid versions.
The new 308 SW station wagon in the third generation as a hatchback is built on the EMP2 platform of the Stellantis alliance. Compared to the “wagon” of the previous iteration, the car has become 51 mm longer, although the wheelbase has grown by only 2 mm. Compared to the hatch, the SW version is 269 mm longer, and the “base” is 57 mm longer. The novelty is aimed at competing with such models as the Volkswagen Golf Variant, Skoda Octavia Combi, Seat Leon Sportstourer, and Renault Megane Estate.
Trunk volume of new items – 608 liters versus 412 liters of the hatchback. The backrest of the second row folds directly out of the trunk with a 40/20/40 split into a flat floor, after which the volume of the cargo compartment is increased to 1,634 liters. At the same time, an object with a length of 1.85 m can be loaded through the fifth door. The raised floor is installed in one of two positions; the list of options contains an electric drive for the fifth door.
With the exception of the stretched “base” and the modified stern with a large trunk, we have the same car that Peugeot showed in March, hence the possible set of equipment is the same. The five-door boasts high-end matrix LED headlights, full LED taillights, 16- to 18-inch wheels, and two 10-inch displays inside. One of the main “highlights” of the model is the avant-garde interior design as opposed to the conservative salon “Golf” and its co-platforms from among the brands of the Volkswagen concern.
So far, modifications have been announced only for European countries with environmental standards Euro 6+: three petrol, two diesel, and a couple of “plug” hybrids. Gasoline engines have a 1.2-liter engine with 110 or 130 hp. The initial one is offered only with 6-speed “mechanics”, more powerful – with “mechanics” or 8-speed “automatic”. Diesel engines are offered with a 1.5-liter unit with 130 hp. paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The duo of hybrids is front-wheel-drive versions of the 180 e-EAT8 and 225 e-EAT8, where the number indicates the peak power of the system. In the first configuration, a 1.6-liter petrol engine with 150 hp. and 250 Nm supplemented by an electric motor for 110 hp. and 320 Nm. In the second ICE it develops up to 180 hp. and the same 250 Nm, working together with the same electric motor. They have the same transmission – 8-speed e-EAT8, traction battery capacity – 12.4 kWh, electric power reserve – up to 60 km. You can charge the battery from wall outlets or electric car chargers.
The European start of sales of the new Peugeot 308 SW is expected in early 2022. The station wagon will be assembled in the same place as the hatchback – at the Stellantis plant in Mulhouse, France.
