The 2018 Detroit Auto Show was the site of the official debut of the fifth generation of the Toyota Avalon flagship sedan, which enjoys good popularity in the North American market.

In comparison with the model of the previous generation, the novelty received a more aggressive and modern appearance, acquired a more spacious interior and a wide range of modern assistants.

However, Toyota decided not to stop there and at the end of November of this year should officially present a special “pumped-over” version of the Toyota Avalon TRD, which was developed by specialists from Toyota Racing Development.

As you already know, the Toyota Avalon TRD will boast a retuned suspension, an improved interior, as well as a number of visual improvements, including an exclusive aerodynamic body kit, a rear spoiler, and original wheels.

As in the case of the Toyota Camry TRD, the car retained the standard powerplant, which is a 3.5-liter six-cylinder petrol engine.

The exterior of the Toyota Avalon TRD

It is worth paying tribute to the specialists from TRD, as they managed to make the already aggressive appearance of an ordinary Toyota Avalon even more daring and defiant.

So, the “muzzle” of the car flaunts a frowning head optics with LED filling, as well as an impressive mouth of the front air intake connected to a false radiator grille.

Special attention should be paid to additional vertical air intakes and a kind of racing splitter, designed to improve the already excellent aerodynamics of the car.

The sedan’s imposing and austere profile features a long bonnet, a domed roof, elegantly embossed sidewalls, as well as circular wheel arches and exclusive side skirts designed by Calty design studio.

The formidable rear of the Avalon TRD is represented by expressive LED taillights interconnected by a narrow LED strip, as well as a compact rear spoiler and a powerful pseudo-diffuser with two large exhaust system trunks and rear fog lights located above them.

There is no exact information about the height of the ground clearance, but if you believe insider information, its value decreased by 15 mm in comparison with the “civil” version of the model, where it was about 140 mm.

It is also worth noting the low coefficient of frontal aerodynamic drag, which is only 0.27 Cx.

As in the case of the regular Toyota Avalon, the TRD version will offer buyers a wide range of body colors, among which Midnight Black, Ruby Flare Pearl, and Parisian Night Pearl deserve special attention.

In addition, the “pumped-over” sedan will be able to offer the installation of exclusive 19-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile tires.

The interior design of the Avalon TRD sedan

The interior of the Toyota Avalon TRD demonstrates a sleek, modern, and distinctive design, one of the key features of which is the falling central dashboard, vaguely resembling a springboard.

The TRD version differs from the regular version of the model by the presence of leather trim with red stitching on the seats, front dashboard, door cards, as well as steering wheel and gearshift selector.

The driver’s seat is represented by a highly informative instrument panel and a multifunctional steering wheel that is convenient in cross-section and grip. The central dashboard houses a large 9-inch multi-touch “monitor” of the multimedia information system, as well as a stylish touch-sensitive control panel for the in-cabin climate.

It is also worth highlighting the fact of the presence of branded floor mats with red edging and metal pads on the pedals.

For passengers in the front row, Toyota has prepared comfortable seats with noticeable (albeit not ideal) lateral support, a lot of adjustments, and all kinds of benefits of modern civilization.

A massive transmission tunnel passes between the seats, on which the gearbox selector, the parking brake activation button, a wide armrest, and cup holders are registered.

Rear riders are offered a welcoming sofa that can accommodate three adults. The distinctive features of the rear row are a separate section of air ducts, a central armrest with a pair of cup holders and an optional multimedia control panel, as well as a record volume of free space by the standards of the class (in any case, the manufacturer says so).

The volume of the trunk, according to preliminary data, is not inferior to the luggage compartment of its predecessor, where it is equal to 453 liters. A nice bonus will be the presence of a full-size spare wheel and a repair kit located under the raised floor.

In the engine compartment of the Toyota Avalon TRD 2020, there is a 3.5-liter six-cylinder petrol engine, similar to the one available for the “civil” version of the Avalon. Such a motor generates 350 hp. and a maximum of 362 Nm of rotational thrust, which can be counted on in the range of 4700 and 6600 rpm, respectively.

The partner of the power plant is a high-performance 8-speed automatic transmission, supplemented by a pair of paddle shifters.

The dynamic characteristics of the flagship sedan are not impressive: acceleration from 0 to 100 takes just over 7 seconds, and the maximum speed reaches 230 km / h. But the fuel consumption, on the contrary, pleases since in the combined mode the user can count on an “appetite” within 9.2 liters for every 100 km of the distance traveled.

The “pumped-over” Avalon TRD is built on the basis of the regular sedan version. True, unlike the latter, the novelty has acquired new springs and shock absorbers, as well as more “powerful” anti-roll bars.

In addition, the flagship sedan received an improved exhaust system, the main feature of which was a more aggressive “rumbling”.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that the chassis refinement was carried out on special racing grounds, due to which the car is distinguished by excellent handling and predictability.

Despite rumors, the Toyota Avalon TRD is powered exclusively by a front-wheel-drive transmission. The steering sports a variable electric power steering similar to the regular sedan version, while the braking system has undergone minor upgrades – TRD has installed larger ventilated discs, supplemented by two-piston mechanisms instead of the standard single-piston ones.
